This week, we welcomed new friends into our community. As the new term begins, children who have turned three in the months before are eligible to join the big room. We have had several children move up from our two year old provision and several children join us from the local community. All children have settled fabulously, supported by their families, our wonderful, loving staff and of course the most important element….the children of Thornton Heath Nursery School. As our intake is rolling, with new children joining throughout the year, our youngest children are not the youngest for long! This means all our children benefit from being “old hands”, supporting younger ones and being responsible leaders; modelling expected behaviour, modelling techniques and potential solutions to the plethora of educational and adventurous challenges set before the children at THNS. The younger children benefit from having not just a high ratio of experienced educators to children, but also an abundance of confident, helpful, experienced friends to assist, support and comfort them should they need it!
This week, Yusuf’s mum gifted us some surplus parsnips, leeks and potatoes. These were put to use in our garden centre, with roots and tips being planted in shallow water in an attempt to grow a new crop. The vegetables themselves were roasted for a snack time treat. A new taste experience for many of the children, with many reporting to carers that they ate, “really yummy white stuff!”….we shall be eating some more next week and making sure the vegetables’ names are remembered… so we can ask for some more at home!
Yusuf’s mum also gave us a tip…she told us that we are lucky enough to have some lilac growing on our fence…a beautiful blue flower which when made wet and rubbed between ones hands…makes soap! We simply had to give it a try! We decided it was okay to pick some flowers for this test, as there is an abundance of flowers to share with our buzzy bee friends… as you can see there were some frothy results!
