As the Summer term commences our garden is continuing to change and spring into life. The children are already able to identify and observe each stage of the ladybird life cycle as eggs, larvae, pupa and adult beetles busy themselves throughout our outdoor spaces. The scientists of tomorrow are not waiting…they are scientists already!
With a cornflour extravaganza organised by Helen, the children were able to enjoy both quiet, focused investigation and some raucous fun as the gooey liquid went from solid to liquid depending on the pressure and speed with which it was handled.
Paper planes have continued to provide a cross curricular activity; fine motor and writing skills our developed as the paper is decorated prior to more fine motor exercise as little hands areĀ supported to fold the paper with precision. Once the plane takes shape, simply throwing it forwards will not do. The children observe each other and commit themselves to some trial and error launching…before long launches are so successful, we are counting foot steps to measure just how far we have managed to fly our home engineered planes!
As our seedlings continue to develop, many have been transplanted to the outdoors…at the mercy of the slugs and snails. Whilst they are not showing themselves physically, our slimy friends are leaving their mark over night as the runner beans have taken a serious hit this week. Will the foliage climb and cascade from our trellis, or will we fail to beat the snails once again?…only time will tell!
