The Bean is Tricked!

Karen’s group emerged triumphant this week as one of their beans became the first in the school to not only germinate but grow too big for the bag in which it was held!

Last week, each group was tasked with wrapping a runner bean in wet cotton wool and placing it inside a transparent bag. Next, the bean had to be placed where the children believed it would germinate first. We had to ask many questions…do seeds germinate in the cold or the warmth? Do they need light or darkness? Can a bean germinate without soil? Karen’s group’s bean was placed next to an inside window…lots of light and lots of warmth. Other groups’ beans were placed by external windows…lots of light but not so warm….many of those have not germinated, let alone grown too big for their bags.  Karen’s group’s bean is now a plant and safely potted in soil ready to grow big and strong before being planted outside.

We were joined in the week by Arlo’s mum who, inspired by much talk about the bubbles in our bubble bread, brought along some bubbly experiments of her own. The children marvelled as they observed a gently erupting lava lamp and a slightly more violent explosion as lids and pots launched themselves all over the garden…all thanks to the power of bubbles!
