Diggers

Spring time means big jobs in the garden. Soil has been shifted, in order to enrich are record sized potato patch…hopefully the harvest will be equally gigantic come July!

We have had our first seeds germinate, all of them sunflowers. We have beans, tomatoes and pumpkins yet to do so…fingers crossed Monday morning will be accompanied by a plethora of seedlings.  All pots are watered and sheltered from any late frosts beneath our sheltered play area.

23 chafer beetle grubs were discovered in our compost bin. The children were fascinated as they handled them gently before rehousing them in a planter away from our seedlings.  Their wriggling, translucent bodies and sharp looking mouth parts left many unnerved, whilst others were delighted to see so many baby creatures in our garden. We learnt some mums do not look after their young, laying eggs and leaving their offspring to fend for themselves…luckily we were on hand to save them from our busy soil scooping!

Some crafting took place under Kamile’s expert guidance; mummy’s across Thornton Heath shall be greeted Sunday morning with a smile and a colourful, handmade creation!
