Plasticine Sculpting and Cucumber Cultivating!

As the heat wave set in the energy levels in the nursery were unaffected!

Putting Marvel’s heroes to one side, this term we are talking about everyday heroes. That means you mums, dads and carers and the people in our community who keep us safe and healthy.

The nursery children have learnt about the equipment police officers use to keep themselves and us safe.

With both real and homemade toy radios and improvised hand cuffs, Thornton Heath’s youngest recruits role played situations; from reuniting lost children with their parents to slamming the cuffs on a prolific litter picker! There have been high octane police chases on foot and by vehicle, as well as gentle support and team work to make sure everybody is safe and happy in our community.

Our artist of the term is Henry Moore. The children’s focus here is on the work itself, not the artist or the time period. We observe together and talk about what we see. Are there any shapes we recognise? Does anything look familiar?  The children saw many different things in Moore’s work, from seeing a “relaxing mummy sit down with a bum bum and boobies,” (child’s comment from observation of Moore’s Reclining Figure) to seeing ” a monsters mouth!” (comment from Moore’s Oval with Points).  After observing examples of Moore’s work, it was time for the children to get to work with plasticine, boards, discussion and imagination.  For many children, it was their first experience sculpting with the malleable, yet firmly holding plasticine. The results were magnificent, as were the discussions and observations from some of Thornton Heath’s youngest artists.

During the week we harvested, prepared and ate our first cucumber. The third crop to be consumed by the children after strawberries and raspberries.

This week’s heat wave culminated in our beach party…photos to follow!
