The children have had a busy week in Nursery this week – our focus has been, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk.’ We have been listening carefully to the story and joining in with some of the repeated refrains such as, ‘Fee, fi, fo, fum.’ Following on from the story we have participated in many creative and imaginative activities. These have included making a giant beanstalk from recycled material and painting it, drawing beanstalks using mark making materials and making beanstalks using playdough. We have even planted beans, hoping for some magic and that they grow as big as Jacks did.
When planting the beans, the children followed the instructions that were given and added soil to their selected pot, made a hole with their finger and placed the bean inside and then covered it with more soil. When this was done, they were encouraged to water their bean. The children also placed another bean in a transparent bag, so they could physically see the process of germination before we plant it in the ground. The children have learnt that the beans need water, sun and soil to make them grow big and strong.
Outside the sun has been shining and we have had lots of water play to help keep us cool. On the hotter days the children were encouraged to recuse toy animals from some ice. The children explored and experimented with different tools to enable them to rescue the animals safely and successfully from the ice. Everyone persevered and worked together till all the animals were free. We discussed about the process of water freezing and turning into ice and also the ice melting back into water because of the heat from the sun.
We remembered to drink lots of water to keep us hydrated.
During snack time we tried a new fruit – Plums. Some of the children were more eager than others to try the plums however those that did seemed to enjoy them.
