I will huff and puff and blow your house down!

Over the past two weeks, the Ladybird Class has been reading the story of The Three Little Pigs. The children have engaged in a variety of activities linked to the story, giving them many opportunities to develop different skills across the curriculum.

One of the most exciting activities involved recreating the houses from The Three Little Pigs. The children used a range of materials, including straw, small sticks, and paper bricks, along with glue sticks to construct their houses. Many children showed great curiosity as they explored the different textures of the materials. They experimented with how each material adhered to paper, applying glue carefully and pressing pieces down with focused concentration. Throughout the activity, they demonstrated developing fine motor skills as they picked up and placed small items, as well as problem-solving skills when materials didn’t stick straight away. They also engaged in simple conversations about the story, using key phrases such as “straw house,” “little pigs,” and “big bad wolf.”

The children also had the opportunity to practise their blowing skills, just like the “Big Bad Wolf”. Using straws, they blew lightweight objects around a tray, watching how their breath made the items move. They found this experience both fun and engaging.

Another tray was set up with props from the story, allowing the children to retell and act out The Three Little Pigs in their own words. They enjoyed using the houses they had created, helping them to see that their work is valued. The children had lots of fun, and there was plenty of huffing and puffing as they immersed themselves in the story.

To conclude the fortnight, the adults performed a puppet show using props from the story. The children listened attentively and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. They then used the puppets to re-enact the story, many of them remembered and used key words from the story in their re-enactment.
