Upon returning from the half term break, the children were delighted to meet two new gold fish to join Gaby 2 after her friend Pancake sadly passed away at the end of the last half term.
The children had to choose names for our new friends. Suggestions were submitted by children with the support of their carers by writing the suggestions on a colourful slip of paper before placing into a basket.
A shortlist of four names was drawn up…and then it was voting time! After a day of voting using our survey board, the results were in and the children carefully counted the votes…there was a tie between “Winnie” and “Coco”. Happily we have two new fish, so we now have Coco and Winnie to care for in the reading room.
As the rain came down midweek it was snail gathering time. In order to protect our burgeoning crops of pumpkin, courgette, potato, chilly, broad beans, tomatoes, leeks, strawberries, raspberries, cucumber…and fennel, snails were gathered and moved a safe distance away from the planting areas…will the areas be safe enough or will the snails return?
Valuable first hand observation of life cycles this week as the garden is full of ladybird eggs, larvae, pupae and adults. Not only this, Jackie brought in a jar of water from her pond full of wriggling, jiggling mosquito larvae. On Friday, the lid was removed and out shot an adult mosquito! These experiences form a vital part of the children’s early years education and show you are never too young to be a scientist!
