Book week busyness!

At Thornton Heath Nursery School, we believe that nurturing each unique child begins with fostering a love of stories and language from the very start. Our Book Week was thoughtfully designed to create a rich language environment where children could discover new words, ideas, and cultures. Through daily story times, book-themed play, and creative activities, children engaged deeply with texts that ignited their curiosity and interests.

Parents and carers were warmly invited to join in this vibrant celebration of books, imagination, and storytelling. Together, we shared books and enjoyed a variety of book-based activities including puppetry, crafts, role play, and songs—key elements of our broad, inclusive, and ambitious curriculum.

Thursday was a highlight, as the nursery filled with children and staff dressed as their favourite book characters from a wide range of genres. Our doors opened to reveal brave heroes, enchanting mermaids, bold princesses, cuddly Paddington bears, and grumpy Gruffalos, creating a magical atmosphere for all.

Many staff chose to dress as Colour Monsters, inspired by a beloved text we use to help children identify and express their feelings and emotions. You can find out more about the Colour Monsters here.

The week came to a joyful conclusion with parents and carers joining their children for a story time session where keyworkers modelled how book sharing is approached in the nursery. This session provided valuable insight into the ways we foster language development and a love of reading through interactive and engaging storytelling.

Book Week was about much more than enjoying stories; it was about laying strong foundations for future learning. By nurturing a love of reading and storytelling, we support children in developing creativity, imagination, and expressive skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
