This week a mysterious treasure chest appeared in our reading room. Every child in the nursery had an opportunity to investigate the battered, old box at their own pace, in their own way.
Some children were fascinated by its locking mechanism, others by the fact that it’s tough metal structure meant it was strong enough to place things ON the chest as well as IN the chest.
Inside the chest, children discovered a collection of photos, a “Father Christmas” tin to open, some numerals and a dice. Whether through shaking, tapping, bouncing or rolling a small collection of conkers was soon discovered. The children were given the time to touch, observe, share and reflect upon their ideas about the items.
This treasure chest session has been devised to pique the children’s interest and intrigue. Providing an open experience led by the children, but guided by specifically chosen collections, patterns, numerical tools, and the children’s key worker. Not simply a mathematical experience, but one of discovery, questioning and reflection through both experience and language.
In other news, seed collecting is still underway, with more than enough for us to share between the birds and our envelopes for next year’s planting sessions.
Emma and the children created a small world car wash as our new friends have continued to master the art of independent paint pouring, blending and application!
Our happy tree display has been put together once more, featuring the whole of our community the tree references they way we keep our nursery a happy place full of adventure and fun!
Next week, children are to begin sharing photos and stories from home, we are set to harvest our giant pumpkin and there may even be a ginger bread man or two on the loose…
