Coming to nursery is all about developing, building relationships, pushing our own boundaries…and having lots of fun!
With reception class calling in September, many of our elder children are taking part in phase two phonics fun. Spotting letters and sounds and challenging the teachers to make the correct sound when they see a particular letter.
This forms a small part of a very busy nursery session. In our wonderful garden the natural world continues to fascinate, engage and inspire.
The ladybirds have finished emerging from their pupa form, leaving their empty cases around the garden; the children have become expert spotters of these tiny wonders.
Many of the poppies have finished flowering, dropping their leaves and their seed pods developing. Many of the children can talk to you about this process and why the poppies are named so.
A huge caterpillar was spotted and gently potted (into an observation magnifier). It was “a rainbow” caterpillar with various colours and a humongous, hairy body. The children viewed it before gently returning it exactly where it came from. The children were confident it would be there the next day to check on, the teachers less so…
The next day, the children ran to give exciting news; there on the log upon which the caterpillar was found 24 hours earlier, was a gently pulsating cocoon…with tell tale hairs exposed on the edges! We have housed the small log upon which the cocoon hangs within a purpose made butterfly net habitat. Could another pet be about to join us for a brief period before release?
Friday saw our sports day extravaganzas. With seven featured events, it was special day and required a rehearsal or two. The children impressed as they independently competed. Parents were on hand to support and model, but there was little need as the children from 2 to 4 years of age competed in obstacle courses, shuttle runs, hurdles, throwing competitions and the classic favourite….The Egg and Spoon Race! Photos to follow on Monday!
