A Week of Wonders in Ladybird Class!

This week, our Ladybird class has been fully immersed in the wonderful world of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The children have loved exploring this classic story through a variety of hands-on activities that sparked incredible creativity, boosted fine motor skills, and introduced new language.

 Getting Creative & Getting Messy!

Sponge-Painted Caterpillars: Our little artists used sponges to paint their very own caterpillars, later using pens to carefully add legs and antennae. It was wonderful to see so much individual creativity shine through.

The Spaghetti Caterpillar Tray: To practice those all-important fine motor skills, we set up a sensory tray featuring a “spaghetti caterpillar” surrounded by different foods.

Tweezers & New Words: The children used tweezers to pick up the food and “feed” the caterpillar. Exploring the spaghetti with their hands was a massive hit. Through this playful learning, they picked up and used great new vocabulary like sticky, long, lots, and more.

Counting, Literacy & Life Cycles

Interactive Storytelling: As we read the story together each day, the children enthusiastically counted the fruits along with us, all the way from one single apple to five juicy oranges.

Maths in Action: They have been doing a fantastic job practicing holding up the correct number of fingers to match our counting.

Fun Science Facts: The children were completely captivated by the caterpillar’s transformation. We spoke about the butterfly life cycle from egg, to caterpillar, to cocoon to beautiful butterfly. The book’s repetitive phrases kept everyone focused and eager to join in.

Other Busy Adventures

Beyond our main story theme, the children have been working hard on other essential everyday skills from mark making to strengthen their hand and arm muscles, to developing mathematical perception through pouring and filling containers at our water station.

What a truly fantastic, busy, and fun week of learning we have had!
