Early Planting

This week, Ladybird Class have been focusing on planting and learning about how plants grow. The children have had the opportunity to plant a variety of seeds and explore the early stages of plant growth.

To begin, the children planted bean seeds using the plastic bag method so they could observe the roots as they start to sprout before transferring them into soil. The children dampened pieces of tissue paper, placed them inside plastic bags, and then added the bean seeds onto the damp tissue. The bags were taped to the window so they could receive plenty of sunlight and begin to grow.

The children also planted tomatoes by cutting a tomato in half and squeezing the seeds from the middle into soil. Finally, they planted sunflower seeds. We are hoping to grow a healthy crop this year. Through these activities, the children have been learning that plants need sunlight, soil, and water in order to grow. They have particularly enjoyed helping to water the plants each day.

Once all of the planting activities were complete, an adult prepared a tuff tray with soil, spoons, pots, and flowers. The children were then able to plant their own flowers independently, showing that they had listened carefully and were able to follow simple instructions.

We have also had a very busy week celebrating World Book Day. Parents and carers joined us for reading sessions, and we set up themed tuff trays with props from popular children’s stories for families to enjoy and act out together. Staff shared stories with both the children and parents, and everyone had lots of fun dressing up as their favourite book characters.

It has been a wonderful and engaging week, and we would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and carers who attended and helped make the celebrations so special.
