Early Reading and Early Planting

This week, the first seeds of the year were sown! In order to ensure germination, flowering and plants going to seed/fruit before July, we plant early and utilise our sheltered play area as it becomes a nursery within a nursery; protecting our seedlings from any late frosts and inclement weather. Plants grow as with the children’s care as hearts, muscles and minds grow alongside them.

The children begin the plant’s life cycle and see it through to the next; storing the seeds for the next life cycle to begin next year. The next generation of eight varieties of fruit and vegetable will be cared for by the next generation of Thornton Heath Nursery School’s children.

World book day has become a week long extravaganza, with activities and events. Simplicity is key as we seek to engage children with reading for life; the books do the work; their illustrations and their words being our launch pads to think, inspire, entertain and discuss. Parents are invited into the nursery on a daily basis to engage with the children, but this week parents have been welcomed to shared reading sessions, activity sessions, a dressing up festival and story times led by teachers for children and carers to take part in.

Will we have our first seedlings by next week? Fingers are crossed, the snail catchers are ready for action!
