This week, we had our first survey of the year.
Throughout the year, the children are posed different questions based on our curriculum, interests expressed by the children… and what we plan to put in our bellies!
By way of an introduction to surveys for our new nursery friends, we kicked off with the question, “Which topping would you like to have on your toast?” As is often the case, a multisensory experience was had by all. Children recognised jam and our special snack time cheese which is a staple favourite…but what was that jar of black stuff? Do we want it on our toast? Could it be chocolate?…Surely not, we only have treats like chocolate on very special occasions. Children observed the sticky black paste oozing in a trail from the spoon. We sniffed the black goo, with a mixed response ranging from outright disgust to the licking of lips. Several children recognised the jar from granny’s cupboard and tasting revealed that the marmite was more popular than first expected. Tallies were taken as the children approached the board and made their mark under the topping of their choice. Tallies were then totalled through careful counting.
With careful counting and careful recording, the surveys were then taken in to the room after group time.
This week, the treasure chest contained a letter from a pirate and a limited amount of bricks. A challenge was posed; Can you build a tower taller than Jim? How can we reach the top of the tower? How can we possibly make so few bricks rise so high? Children were forced to improvise and take measured risks in order to rise to the challenge.
Harvest time again saw chard being picked along with spring onions and fennel. Picked, scrubbed and cooked within 10 minutes. The freshest you can get!
Our olive trees will often fruit, however this year for the first time the olives have ripened on the trees and we have been able to pick them and squeeze them. Exploring their different colours, textures and hidden “pips” which will pop out when you least expect it!
