We have been reading a new story this week called ‘Whatever Next’. The children are really enjoying the story featuring a little bear using their imagination to go to the moon. He finds wellington boots to act as his space boots, a colander to be his space helmet, and a cardboard box to be his rocket. As always, we have been retelling the story using images, as well as pairs of boots, boxes, and our own space helmets. The bear has a picnic in space, so next week the children are going to make a large rocket, and we are going to the moon and having a picnic together!
The children have also been exploring a large toy rocket with figures for them to play with and use their imagination. This simple but effective activity has covered many areas of the curriculum, and we will continue it next week as there is much more to gain from this. The children have shown great enthusiasm and creativity in their play, and it’s wonderful to see them so engaged.
On Tuesday, for our snack time, the children made their own fruit salad. We talked about the fruit we were using, discussing the shape, colour, and size, and wanted to see if the children could name each item of fruit. We used apples, oranges, bananas, pineapple, watermelon, and strawberries. Each child had a plastic plate, knife, and cup/bowl to place their chopped fruit into. They were all guided and supported to use a knife safely and correctly. The children learned and used new language such as chop, slice, and cut. Once the fruit was cut up and placed into their own cup/bowl, all the children tasted the different fruits. Not all of them liked every fruit, but some asked for more and even drank the fruit juices at the bottom of their cup. This activity not only helped them develop their fine motor skills but also encouraged them to try new foods and expand their vocabulary.
