The children have had an exciting week as the “Living Eggs” arrived. They have had the opportunity to observe the life cycle of a chick. The farmer brought 10 chicken eggs and an incubator to keep them warm. We visited the Reading room in the 3-year-old room to observe the eggs, which were numbered. We asked the children which number they thought would hatch first and then the wait began. Each day the children checked in to see which egg had hatched. By Thursday, all the eggs had hatched, and we now have 10 fluffy chicks. We will continue to check on the chicks daily as they grow very fast. The children saw how the chicks come out of the egg all wet and straggly, then dry out and turn fluffy. Within a few days to a week, they will begin to get “adult” feathers. We tried to be very quiet around the chicks to avoid scaring them. The children have been very engaged and interested in the process, and it has been a wonderful learning experience for them.
Next week, the chicks will be strong enough to handle, something the children and some teachers are eager to do. In addition to observing the chicks, we have been exploring fine motor activities and continuing with our theme, ‘Our Heroes’. We used ‘Coloured Spaghetti’ to enhance fine motor skills, promote colour recognition, encourage creativity and imagination, support language development, and facilitate social interaction and co-operative play. When discussing ‘Our Heroes’, we talked about going to the dentist and brushing teeth. Pictures of teeth were provided, and using toothbrushes, the children were encouraged to clean the teeth. We discussed the importance of brushing teeth, how often to brush, and if we had visited the dentist. The children enjoyed the activity and showed great interest in learning about dental hygiene, and it provided an excellent opportunity for them to practice their fine motor skills.
Overall, it has been a fantastic week full of learning and excitement. The children have been very enthusiastic about all the activities and have shown great curiosity and eagerness to learn. We look forward to more exciting activities and learning experiences next week.
