This week we welcomed new children into the THNS community. What better way to do it than with a pizza party!?
At Thornton Heath Nursery School we are rainbow children, we eat a wide range of fruit and vegetables of different colours to make sure we get all the goodness our bodies and minds need to grow and to be strong.
Bubble bread dough was made during the week, with ingredients measured by the cupful, creating a valuable opportunity for the children to build their “careful counting” skills and recognising small amounts or subitising.
Turn taking and observation skills are developed as each child has their own task to perform in the dough making process. Physical strength and coordination is essential as ingredients are added, folded and stirred with focus and care.
During this time of year the garden is our larder. Only the ripe tomatoes were expertly selected by little hands. Several courgettes were also noticed amongst our densely packed vegetable patch, they too were picked ready for pizza topping.
From plant to pizza in less than a hour, the children were hands on in every aspect of the pizza production. Building social, communication and physical skills whilst making links between the natural world and the food we eat.
Taking their new pizza making skills back into the nursery room, the playdough area became a pizza kitchen it its own right…as next week promises to be a little warmer and sunnier there may be more home grown produce being prepared and another chance to eat and enjoy food together!
