This week the Ladybird class have been very busy. As you know it was Guy Fawkes night on Sunday and we were talking about fireworks whilst the children were doing their splatter painting to represent the sparkly fireworks in the sky. This is not easy for the children to do but they were happy to give it a go. Adults asked what sounds they heard the fireworks make, lots of the children said ‘Bang and pop!’. Adults used the opportunity to introduce words such as crackle, whizz, scream, zoom, explode and lots more which they may not have heard before.
This week the children have been learning about Diwali, celebrating the festival of light, the children had an opportunity to make their own Diva lamps using salt dough. The children had to manipulate the dough by rolling, squeezing and pressing it to form the shape of the Diva lamp. The lamps have been baked ready for the children to decorate next week. Diwali starts on Sunday and continues for five days so the children will be listening to the story of Rama and Sita, this story helps teach the children about different cultures and how Diwali began and the meaning behind the festival of light.
This week the children have been looking at the story ‘The Gingerbread Man,’ they have really enjoyed it and some children are able to tell us what happens next in the story. On Wednesday the children were given an opportunity to bake their own gingerbread men biscuits, they were able to help measure the ingredients and mix the ingredients together. They used a rolling pin to roll out the dough which they then pressed a cutter into make the gingerbread man shape. The children waited patiently for the gingerbread men to cook and as we opened the oven we were happy to see that the ginger bread men did not run away! The children were then able to enjoy their biscuits whilst we read ‘The gingerbread man’ story to them, they made so many that they were able to take one home to share with their family, well done everyone.
As it was Friday and all the children have been so busy producing fantastic work through their learning challenges they had a little treat. Jim from the big room brought in some sparklers and all the children sat around the wall to watch him light them. They watched as the sparklers made lots of colours as they burnt down, we could hear the crackling sounds they made. When we had finished watching the sparklers we all went inside and had a little Diwali party. The room looked beautiful, it had so many pretty lights. We danced to some ethnic music then sat down to have some chocolate bubble bread and biscuits. We would like to say a big thank you to the nursery room and the older children for inviting us to share the fun and to Jim for the beautiful sparklers.
