The sudden blast of winter weather gave us the opportunity to explore our frozen garden. The chilli plants, survivors from the summer, have finally given up on us, with the frost wilting their leaves… Even the mini beasts seem to have left their usual haunts beneath logs and bricks…searches by the children have found them devoid of the usual slugs, snails and centipedes. Lots of questions and reflections; Have the parents died, leaving their eggs behind? Have they found somewhere warm to shelter from the big freeze? If the mummies and daddies die, who will look after the babies?
Our polar region animal collections have been popular this week, with ice both inside and out. Maria and the children were inspired to create their own small world ice mountain. Using plaster, papier mache and paint, the creation soon took over two tables and is set to grow even bigger!.
In the week, there was a kind donation of NASA space exploration small world toys…perhaps the ice mountain will become a lunar landscape next week…only time will tell.
