With the cold weather setting in the children agreed it would be nice to have a hot snack…it was campfire-cooked-hot dog time!
Before the big day, during group time, a letter arrived from Jenette. It explained that she’d been shopping and bought some vegan sausages…but there were no hot dog buns! The children had to make their own sausage flat breads!
The letter was displayed and read aloud by the group leader, using their “following finger” to bring the children’s attention to both the directional flow of reading and the sounds made by individual and groups of letters.
After reading the letter, the children were invited to make the dough, as well as write a reply to Jenette to be folded, enveloped and delivered accordingly.
Fabulous listening and attention was displayed as the children followed instructions to turn their sticky, hard to handle dough, into magnificent bubble flat breads.
Outside, we spoke about the needs of a fire; air, fuel and heat…and how fire fighters use water to take all or just one of the three things away to put fires out. We too had a pot of water on hand in case the fire became out of control or if there were any emergencies.
The children listened to, and followed the rules of being around and cooking upon a fire. Nothing is dangerous as long as we follow the rules and listen to each other carefully.
We watched water boil rapidly and evaporate from the BBQ lid. We saw the steam rise “to join” the clouds. An introduction and foundation of future studies on the water cycle…
We then counted the flat breads onto the grill before timing the cook. Careful counting in 10 second intervals, checking the bread each time.
The children observed the bubbles in their dough “getting bigger” or “expanding” as they reacted to the heat before becoming pillowy, soft bubble flatbreads!
Finally, it was time to eat.
As always, a fun, adventurous, sensory experience…. but also a scientific and tasty one!
