We were absolutely delighted to run our first parent workshop in over two years this week, and what a fabulous workshop it was! All of the children at Thornton Heath Nursery School have been taking a book home to read every week since the beginning of the school year in September 2021. We have had lots of parents asking us how to “read” with their child, in response to this we ran a “Book sharing with your child” workshop. Reading and storytelling with babies and children promotes brain development and imagination, develops language and emotions, and strengthens relationships. Sometimes you can read. And sometimes you can look at picture books, sing songs or tell stories from your culture.
It was wonderful that so many of you were able to attend the workshop particularly as it meant that you also got to spend time book browsing with your child after the information session.
We know that you found it informative from the feedback that you left us:
- Great presentation
- I got some fantastic tips for making reading with my child more fun
- The workshop was very helpful and I am looking forward to attending others
- It made me feel more confident to share a book, I thought it was just about reading the words.
The parents that attended were also given some handouts to help them book share at home. These handouts are available to download if you click on the work shop tab on the main menu of the website.
We have started advertising our next workshop which will be “Early number sense”. Look out for the sign up sheets, we hope to see you there.
