Cold Snap!

This week we welcomed new families and new staff members to our community. The children have been both wonderful role models and supportive friends; offering comfort to children feeling nervous leaving their carers through invitations to play or simply through an open hand or a warm embrace.

Although there is warmth between us, outside conditions have been a different matter! However, ice and bitter cold will not hold the children of Thornton Heath Nursery School back! With hats, gloves, coats and multiple layers the garden has been as busy this week as when the summer sun is shining.

The big climb was open for part of the week. Icy wet conditions meant the children had to adapt their use and movement whilst up high… but of course this responsibility for safety is a vital part of learning how to manage risk throughout life. When conditions were too slippery our vocabulary and language were informed through our experiences; we decided the high platforms were not just dangerous but “treacherous” and that the ice left our decking “as smooth as glass”.  This meant a mutual agreement to close the area was needed!

Inside, there were conkers and pine cones in semolina; an interesting combination of textures. Collections were put moved, sorted and counted using tweezers and other long handled implements; providing a chance to exercise and strength hand muscles, developing fine motor strength and coordination.

After the Christmas break the playdough table was in high demand providing a creative and social experience. The busy area was a great platform for cooperation and collaboration; there’s only so much playdough to go around!

On Friday, we were joined by coach Debbie who kicked off the New Year with a session on ball skills.
