Last week’s midweek return from half term meant there was not time for preparations and a party for Diwali, which was celebrated on 31st October. This week allowed us ample time to prepare accordingly…
After telling the story of Rama and Sita’s triumph over the baddie Ravana, we discussed the importance of kindness, sharing and working together. We looked at the example of Rama’s brother Lakshmana, who stands by his brother’s side throughout their troubles. We spoke about Sita’s clever, calm attitude as she leaves a trail for her loved ones to follow. As always, Hanuman, who bravely offers assistance to those in need, was many a child’s favourite character.
We reflected upon the mistake of snatching and how sharing means there can always be enough for everybody to live in happiness! We lit candles to show the beauty of light and discussed how it helps to keep in mind that the goodies will always beat the baddies, as long as we do our best and work together .
Later in the week, salt, flour and water was expertly combined with care and attention to create a soft and malleable dough from which our Diva lamps could be shaped by hand. They were then painted, with the children encouraged to use colour and glitter to keep their divas bright, forming an integral part of our Diwali celebrations.
A vital part of our teaching the children to live healthily, is the concept of treat foods. We keep our everyday snacks healthy with dairy/ alternatives and rainbow coloured fruit and vegetables; the children know that different colours mean different vitamins and minerals to keep our bodies working hard and well. However, on a special celebration a treat may be baked by the children. We discuss the importance of balance; treats are for special times and not for every meal. As always, a vote was undertaken in order to choose the party treat… Chocolate bubble bread was the unanimous winner. This meant dough making and chocolate smashing took place, with time to spare for the dough to prove, ready for the big party.
Thursday was party day… A wonderful time was had by all, with an interactive theatre show of the Rama and Sita story, lighting of the diva lamps, bubble bread sharing and….Diwali Disco Dancing!
