Wilting leaves left us with no choice but to have an emergency potato harvest this week. While the haul was less than abundant, there was a sufficient amount for everybody to have a little taster of home grown and home baked chips!
During Monday’s group time, the children surveyed each other asking, “Which dip would you prefer on your chips?” From a choice of ketchup and “red hot chilli sauce”, the quantity of votes for each was totalled and compared, and there was a clear winner.
During the week, the earwigs, centipedes and spiders within our growing sacks were rudely disturbed as we harvested our crop. The children convened and there was great potato count. Last year, there was a secret Tesco supplement needed. This year, happily there was no such need and the children experienced genuine farm to fork eating within a hour of digging up the vegetables!
Later in the week, it was carrot time. These required expert digging and scrubbing before being gently boiled and enjoyed at snack time. We can safely say it is too early for harvest, with yields low. However, as our elder children prepare to move on to Primary school time was of the essence. Come September it will be pumpkin, courgette, cucumber and sunflower seed galore!
